Edward James Olmos is coming to San Diego for the Vital Aging Conference

We are glad to announce that at the upcoming Vital Aging Conference we have Edward James Olmos as our special guest. He is remembered for his role as Commander Adama in the television series “Battlestar Galactica”, or for one of his many other starring roles in “My Family – Mi Familia”, which is about a Mexican family that moves to East L.A. and in which he acts with Jennifer Lopez. This versatile 59 year-old and very talented actor also played Jess Gonzalez, a Korean war veteran, in the PBS show “American Family”. Olmos received a Golden Globe Award and an Emmy nomination for his work in HBO’s “The Burning Season”. In addition, he has worked on various other movies, including “Stand and Deliver” and “Blade Runner”.

One of the main topics at the Vital Aging Conference will be diabetes, a growing problem among older adults that affects especially the Hispanic elderly. Edward James Olmos is the national spokesperson of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, an organization committed to the mission of supporting the search for a cure for diabetes and its complications by supporting research.

We also will have as speaker a renown diabetes specialist: Dr. Steven Elderman, a world Dr.Eldermanrenown diabetes specialist and Type I diabetes expert from first-hand experience, will be the speaker on diabetes at our Vital Aging Conference.

Dr. Elderman is the founder and director of Taking Control of Your Diabetes (TCOYD), a non-profit association with the mission of educating on how to control diabetes with the objective of motivating people with diabetes to take a more active role in their lives towards a better quality of life. This is precisely what he will do at our Vital Aging Conference. He will share his programs’ success to motivate all our participants to take control of their diabetes.

Dr. Elderman is the author of the book “Taking Control of Your Diabetes” and we share a some of his words on the topic, “The medical advances in the care of diabetes continue and techniques to take care of the patient are reached.” “We have a strong conviction that the key to improving diabetes care in this country is informing and educating people who are living with diabetes and this is so they may be able to keep diabetes under control.”

In addition to diabetes, we have other presentations planned for the Vital Aging Conference on important topics for good health, such as physical activity, nutrition, the art of caring for a love one, controlling stress and your mental health, among others.

The Vital Aging Conference, organized by Aging & Independence Services will take place on June 15 at the Town & Country Resort in Mission Valley from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cost is $15 per person and $5 for parking. All attendees will be provided with a light breakfast, lunch and plenty of information at the interactive exhibit booths and talks. Adult daycare service will also be provided to allow caregivers to enjoy the talks and presentations without worry.

On the same date and time, there will be an event held in North County at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido. This event will be linked via satellite with the Vital Aging Conference.
