The Health Benefits From the

WIC Program

WIC HAS BEEN AROUND MORE THAN 30 YEARS FOR A REASON: IT WORKS!

....WIC Provides nutrition and health care education, counseling and vouchers for nutritious foods to income-eligible women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, and children from birth through age five.

“The goal of the WIC Program is to decrease the risk of poor birth

outcomes and to improve the children’s health during critical

stages of growth and development.”

WIC Mother and her two girls

Many studies have proven WIC’s health benefits for the Women,
Infants & Children who participate.

....Over three decades, WIC has an extraordinary track record of tremendous success in improving the health and nutritional status of the women, infants and children it serves that is proven by numerous studies. These studies have shown that mothers who are WIC participants have healthier babies and children than other non-WIC participants..

...The Centers for Disease Control and other researchers have found that WIC decreases the incidence of iron-deficiency anemia, a widespread problem among low-income children. This is vitally important because anemia affects a child’s ability to learn. Anemia is also a health risk - the development of motor skills is delayed, memory is impaired, susceptibility to lead poisoning is increased, and the ability to combat infection is reduced.

.......• Good nutrition helps protect the entire family against health problems

....WIC contributes to improved pregnancies and healthier children, resulting in better health and dramatic savings in medical care costs. The U.S. Department of Agriculture research has shown that participation in the WIC program significantly improves children’s intake of iron, folate, and vitamin B and that by participating in WIC, the entire family also improves on Healthy Eating Index scores for the household.

....Good nutrition during the pre- and postnatal stages is an essential part of sustaining the health of mothers and their future infants, but high costs can make quality care unreachable for many pregnant women.

For the community in the South of San Diego, the San Ysidro Health Center has been offered the federally-funded Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) supplemental nutrition food program.

......• Nutrition counseling helps parents to learn how to make healthier choices for life

.....WIC is a short-term intervention program designed to influence lifetime nutrition and health behaviors in a targeted at-risk population.

......“Since we know how difficult it is for people at nutritional risk to change poor eating habits they have developed over a lifetime, we have a professional and committed staff that provides great support and educates parents on making healthy choices on food and lifestyle” Janet Salazar, WIC SYHC Director, explained.

......• Healthy Foods & Helpful Advice. That’s What WIC Is All About!

.....A nutritional risk is any problem that is associated with diet, growth, or medical diagnosis that might impact nutritional status. WIC nutrition staff determines whether a woman, infant or child is nutritionally at risk through a nutritional assessment that uses their medical history and dietary intake. This is determined during a consultation that all WIC participants receive individually to monitor their diets, height, weight, and blood iron in order to identify nutritional needs and provide them with individualized counseling to addresses those needs. This is to make sure that pregnant women deliver healthy babies and their infants will grow up normally, strong and healthier. With this individual consultation, each WIC participant will receive the help of nutritionists and ensure learning about the health benefits of a proper diet for themselves, their children and their family so they may make the necessary changes.
