Crimes against older adults
continue to
escalate.

Services
Some of the
criminal activity involves bold, direct assaults. Other crimes
focus on tricking seniors out of their money.
"Unfortunately, many criminals view seniors as easy
targets," says District Attorney Bonnie M. Dumanis.
Dumanis and her office are joining with San Diego County
Board of Supervisors Chairman Bill Horn, Supervisor Pam
Slater-Price and several government and nonprofit organizations
to offer Consumer Protection Day as a way to bring greater
community awareness to this problem.
The free
event will feature a morning panel on identity theft with 10 News
reporter Marti Emerald. Financial expert/journalist George
Chamberlin will lead a panel in the afternoon on financial elder
abuse.
Keynote
speaker will be Barry Minkow, a former con artist who now helps
older adults and others avoid being the victims of con
artists.
Consumer Protection Day will also include several exhibits
with tips on how to avoid scams, plus free food and
entertainment.
